Putting the 'Student' back in Student Politics.

As your prospective Students Union President for Academic Year 2024/25, I will endeavour to serve King's Students' Interests pursuant to the following Four-Point Plan to Build, Empower, Invest and Accommodate. Beyond being action words, here is what I mean specifically:

  • Build: Pursuant to this promise, I would endeavour to greatly strengthen existing support networks to help students generate gainful careers and employment opportunities for King's students. This would include an active forage into emerging markets such as the Middle East, South Asia and the Americas, and as your President, I would endeavour to host a plethora of careers fairs, talks and skill development events, including companies from the UK and abroad. This would, for me, aid in creating a student base at King's that is more prepared for what comes after life at university.

Students' overall experience at university is principally influenced by the kind of employment they are able to secure at its end, and an increased emphasis on this by the students union would undoubtedly bring with it a range of benefits for all following cohorts at King's.

  • Empower, don't Interfere: Pursuant to this promise, I am committed to work on reducing the bureaucratic nature and procedures at KCLSU. This includes a simplification of events confirmations, external speakers and reimbursement procedures. I believe this will be of great help to our Student Groups, ensuring quicker turnaround times and ultimately increasing the amount of working freedom each of these groups can enjoy.

In addition to this, I would also lobby the university for an increased amount of funding to the tune of GBP 50,000, all of which would go into a special President's fund, to be allocated to societies as scholarships for worthy events. These two objectives acting in tandem would allow societies to function more independently than before, and with better support from the student union than before, thus fulfilling a core objective of mine: that our Students' Union should aim to empower, not interfere.

  • Invest: Pursuant to this promise, I would endeavour to provide greater cost of living and accommodation support to our students throughout their time at university. In addition to greater assistance from the university on these twin issues, I would also lobby the university to provide more uni-owned and affiliated accommodation, including the possibility of partnering with private accommodation providers and making these properties available for King's students via the KCL accommodation portal. I believe this would create an inherently more secure university experience for King's students, without the jeopardy of the lack of an accommodation or insufficient funds hanging over our students' heads

  • Accommodate- A more flexible university is a better university: Finally, I would endeavour to include a greater amount of flexibility in the fee payment system, by allowing students to make their fee payments in three separate instalments, instead of the current two. I would also work hard to lobby the university and try to implement a year-long freeze in fee hikes for international students. Ultimately, I believe this would make the university experience more accessible to students from disadvantaged and underprivileged backgrounds while allowing the university to maintain its sustainable management of its finances, and as such, I am willing to work as hard as necessary to deliver on this promise.

I am committed to serving you to the best of my abilities, and I pledge not to stop working until all our students grievances are addressed. The road is long, and many difficulties exist, but your student experience at King's deserves positive reinforcement, and I genuinely believe that I am the best person to bring that transformation about.
